What type of door lock is the most secure?
The most secure type of door lock depends on the application, but generally, deadbolts and high-security cylinder locks are considered the strongest options for residential and commercial doors. Deadbolts offer better resistance to forced entry compared to standard spring latch locks. For even greater protection, look for locks that are pick-resistant, bump-resistant, and drill-resistant. Some premium brands also offer locks that are part of restricted key systems, adding another layer of security by limiting who can duplicate the keys. For added convenience, digital or smart locks can provide security without physical keys, though mechanical options are still often more tamper-resistant.
Can I replace a lock without changing the whole door hardware?
Yes, in many cases you can simply rekey or replace the cylinder in a lock without needing to change the entire hardware. Rekeying means the internal mechanism is altered so that old keys no longer work, and new keys are issued. This is a common solution when keys are lost, tenants change, or security needs to be updated without a full lock replacement. If the hardware is damaged or outdated, replacing the entire lock may be the better choice. A locksmith can assess your current system and recommend the most cost-effective option.
What’s the difference between keyed alike and master keyed systems?
In a keyed alike system, all locks are operated by the same key — ideal for simplifying access when multiple doors need to be opened by a single person. In contrast, a master key system allows multiple levels of access: individual keys open specific locks, while a master key can open all locks in the system. Master keying is commonly used in commercial settings, apartment buildings and schools where different users need controlled access to different areas. Both systems can be customised by a locksmith to meet your specific access needs.
