What type of safe should I choose for home use?
The best safe for home use depends on what you’re protecting. Fireproof safes are ideal for documents and valuables you want to shield from heat and smoke damage, while burglary-resistant safes are built to deter theft with reinforced doors and locking mechanisms. If you’re storing firearms, look for safes that meet local gun storage regulations. Many modern safes offer features like digital locks, adjustable shelving and insurance ratings based on cash or contents value. Consider the size, location, and level of access you need before purchasing, and make sure it’s fixed securely to prevent removal.
Are in-ground safes a good option?
In-ground safes are a good option for those seeking a discreet and secure storage solution, especially for cash, jewellery or sensitive documents. These safes are installed into concrete floors and covered by a heavy-duty dust lid that sits flush with the surface, often hidden beneath rugs or furniture. While very secure against theft, they are not waterproof and should not be installed in areas prone to water flow, like bathrooms or laundries. Installation should be handled by professionals to ensure no underground pipes or electrical cables are compromised during setup.
What does SCEC endorsement mean for a safe?
SCEC endorsement refers to approval by the Security Construction and Equipment Committee, a government body that certifies security equipment for use in Australian Government applications. SCEC-endorsed safes meet strict standards for resisting forced entry, manipulation and tampering. They’re commonly used by defence, government departments and institutions handling sensitive data. Safes in this category are rated by class (e.g., Class A, B, C) and must be fitted with approved locking devices to remain compliant. If you require a high-security solution or work in a government-related role, an SCEC-endorsed safe is likely the most appropriate choice.
